Tom Alves has eight years’ experience in policy and advisory work with the Victorian Government and fourteen years’ experience working in architectural practices in Melbourne and Sydney.

As Senior Adviser, Urban Design and Architecture, at the Office of the Victorian Government Architect, Tom led the development of apartment design standards for Victoria, helped to establish the Victorian Design Review Panel, and was Lead Author of the Housing Chapter during the development of Melbourne’s metropolitan strategic plan.

Dr Alves has contributed to ARC and AHURI-funded housing and urban research at Melbourne, Monash and Swinburne universities. His research has focused on urban consolidation, apartment provision, medium density housing, housing affordability and the process of ‘deliberative development’, a term he coined with Dr Andrea Sharam.

Tom holds an Honours degree in History from The University of Sydney and a PhD in Housing and Urban Studies from Swinburne University, where his thesis, Managing Medium Density Housing Development, investigated the policy and process of urban consolidation in metropolitan Melbourne.
